What SCOOP UK is aiming to build?
This year, SCOOP UK is aiming to build a national youth movement to promote climate action and climate equality. We aim to run two campaigns. The first campaign will be centred around ‘Addressing Barriers To Activism: How To Make Sustainable Living Accessible To All’, and will be primarily built through online creative portals, be it blog entries, fireside chats, community online discussions, instagram takeovers etc. The second campaign will be aimed at enacting physical change to ensure sustainable living is made accessible to all, entitled ‘Demanding Positive Change: A 3-Point Campaign for the Future’. We will campaign towards; (1) reducing food waste, (2) reducing plastic packaging, and (3) working with university caterers to introduce carbon footprint labels on their products.
In August 2018, a global youth movement rose against political climate inaction. It demanded change. Three years on, what can we do here in the UK? It is about time that the 2.38 million students at universities across the UK act to ensure sustainability is a right, rather than a luxury. Tackling the climate crisis will require rapid changes in our consumption patterns. Ensuring equal access to these changes is central to building a future with little to no food waste and food security for all.
